VISITORS
Patrick, my old (The) Rocket colleague and his partner Holly are in town to visit his brother, his wife and six-month old child. I met them downtown in Rockefeller Center at the Anish Kapoor Sky Mirror installation.

Small and expensive lunch at Dean and Deluca. $11 for soup, some red beans and rice, and some broccoli. NYC makes you feel stupid for eating sometimes. Sense of place can be odd. “You’re in a city for sometimes years and every once in awhile you think, wow! I live in New York City, or Seattle or wherever.” I feel like I’m still on vacation. Patrick has the best laugh. Holly’s hair is almost totally grey since the last time I saw her a few years ago. We head over to the International Center of Photography, which I’ve never heard of. Show is called Ectopia. It’s dense and fascinating. The Natural World. Pollution. Natural disasters. Artists as naturalists. Favorite piece is a series of short films by Sam Easterson. Attaches small video cameras to animals. Call Cara. She’s had a bad interview. I suggest she starts her own computer tutoring business. Patrick wants a Hoody. I take them to H&M and we go shopping. Say goodbye. Eat a hot dog. Have some coffee. Swim. Meet Cara there. Pool is cold. I didn’t eat enough. After swimming I pass this crazy demonstration. Wait staff at outside dining area is demanding their tips. Woman caterwauls with bullhorn. In Seattle the riot police would show up. Here there’s a police barricade. No police. Cara goes out to eat with a friend. I eat a burrito then go home. Set up new computer.
