MOSTLY JAZZ FESTIVAL
Went to see a group called Bassinstinct play for free at the Mostly Jazz Festival at the Austrian Culture Forum on 52nd. Read about the show in the NYTs, and who can resist the chance to see six bassists playing together. Standing against a wall in a hot and tiny theater surrounded by Europeans had it’s own kind of comfort for me. There were hints of classical composition mixed in with experimental tonalities and treated instrumentation using chopsticks and percussion. Quite lovely actually. After the show I made extremely small talk with this striking woman standing next to me who spoke broken English and who I found out later after going over the program is one of the performers playing this Monday night. I explored the space a bit afterwards, which was archecturally fascinating and had some photographic galleries open for viewing, with some deliciously disturbing images.
